Toddler Ear Piercing – The Process

If you’re thinking of having your toddler’s ears pierced there is a lot that you need to consider. This post will give you some crucial information that will allow you to make an informed decision.

Ear piercing young is largely a cultural practice, and whilst it has a lot of backlash in some cultures, it can be a wonderful experience for the entire family. Still, not everything is smooth sailing in the toddler ear piercing world. Therefore, if you are able to bring your child earlier, things will go a lot more smoothly.

If you’re thinking of having your little girl’s ears pierced, and she is now a toddler who has just added the word NO to her vocabulary, this could be trickier than you think. The most difficult part of the treatment is that the child needs to trust me in order for me to carry out the procedure. A usual sign that allows me to tell if the child will let me do the procedure is if she’s happy for me to put numbing cream on her ears. Specially post Covid, many children are not well socialised as a result of isolation. A stranger fiddling with her ears can be very threatening to the child.

It’s important to know that I do not hold children down to pierce them. I negotiate with them with a mixture of Youtube and treats. Provided the child is amicable to having me invade their personal space, they feel no pain. Do some children shed a tear or two, of course, but it’s not from pain.

The most difficult children to pierce are those that have previously been elsewhere and the piercing has gone wrong. If they’re a toddler or older, the child will remember the pain and no amount of “I’m not going to hurt you” is enough when a child has already been traumatised elsewhere. These are the children that often, will not allow me near them.

So what happens if a child says NO when I try to touch them? The treatment is immediately stopped. Whilst parents have a say on the decisions they make on behalf of their child, the child’s autonomy over their body supersedes it. The entire point of what I do, the way it takes an hour in order to not rush the child or the parents, the numbing cream to make the air piercing painless, is to make the child enjoy the experience. I refuse to assault a child that has made it clear that they don’t want the procedure.

I hope the above information will allow you to make an informed decision. I’m sure that it’s clear that baby ear piercing is just a lot easier.
